Root rot from overwatering
highThe soil is likely staying wet too long between waterings, suffocating the roots and letting fungus take hold.
Favorable conditions
- •Watering on a fixed schedule instead of checking soil moisture
- •Pot without drainage holes, or a saucer holding standing water
- •Soil mix that retains too much moisture for this plant
Management
- 1Stop watering until the top 2 inches of soil are completely dry.
- 2Gently remove the plant and check the roots — trim away any brown, mushy roots with clean scissors.
- 3Repot into fresh, well-draining soil and a pot with drainage holes.
- 4Water only when the soil is dry to the touch going forward.
