A slow-developing fungal disease entering through pruning wounds and gradually killing cordons and arms.
Symptoms
Stunted, cupped shoots emerging in spring on affected arms, wedge-shaped brown wood necrosis in cordons, and gradual arm dieback.
Favorable conditions
- •Pruning during wet weather, which favors wound infection
- •Large, unprotected pruning wounds
Management
- 1Prune during dry weather and treat large wounds with a protectant
- 2Remove and destroy dead wood
- 3Biological pruning-wound treatments (Trichoderma, Fusarium lateritium) can reduce infection
