Water-soaked spots that enlarge rapidly, releasing enzymes that leave the berry limp, brown, and leaking; under humid conditions the fruit becomes covered in white mycelium with black spherical sporangia.
Favorable conditions
•Warm temperatures and high humidity
•Wounded, bruised, or overripe fruit — the fungus cannot infect undamaged tissue
Management
1Cool harvested fruit rapidly below 10°C
2Handle fruit carefully to avoid bruising
3Remove discarded plant refuse and ripe fruit from the field
4Fungicide treatment is not usually needed if sanitation is good
