A light-exposure disorder that turns tuber flesh green and raises solanine levels.
Symptoms
Green discoloration develops under the skin with a bitter taste, from chlorophyll and solanine produced when tubers are exposed to light.
Favorable conditions
- •Light exposure during growth (shallow hilling), harvest, storage, or retail display
Management
- 1Hill soil adequately over developing tubers
- 2Store and display tubers in the dark
- 3Avoid prolonged light exposure during handling
