Blossom-End Rot of Tomato
lowTomatophysiological
A calcium-related fruit disorder made worse by irregular watering, not a pathogen disease.
Symptoms
A flat, leathery, sunken, dark brown-to-black area develops at the blossom end of the fruit.
Favorable conditions
- •Irregular soil moisture (alternating drought and heavy watering)
- •Low or poorly available soil calcium
- •Excess nitrogen fertilization or root pruning
Management
- 1Water consistently and mulch to even out soil moisture
- 2Ensure adequate calcium availability in the root zone
- 3Avoid excess nitrogen and root disturbance
