Aloe vera
A thick-leaved succulent that stores water in its leaves — sap is famously used to soothe burns. Needs excellent drainage.
⚠️ Toxic to pets if ingested — keep out of reach.
Soft, mushy, translucent leaves are a sign of overwatering and possible root rot — aloe stores water in its leaves and needs the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Thin, curling leaves suggest the opposite: underwatering or too little light.
Remove the small offsets ("pups") that form at the base once they're a few inches tall and have their own roots, and pot them in fast-draining succulent or cactus mix.
Repot every 2-3 years, or sooner if pups have crowded the pot — always use a well-draining succulent mix, since regular potting soil holds too much moisture.
