Yellowing stems that feel soft or mushy near the soil line indicate overwatering — the rhizomes underground rot quickly if kept wet. New growth staying small and pale usually just means the plant needs more light, though it will survive in low light.
A single leaflet placed in moist soil or water can eventually grow its own small rhizome and roots, though this is slow (often several months). Dividing an existing rhizome cluster is faster and more reliable.
Repot only every 2-3 years, sizing up just one pot size at a time — an oversized pot holds excess moisture around the rhizomes and increases rot risk.
